Thursday/Friday:
Arnhem - Kampen
The embarkation takes place in Arnhem. As soon as everyone is on board, we leave Arnhem and head for Kampen. This Hanseatic city, located on the river IJssel, used to be one of the most famous trading cities in Europe. In the city centre you will find many beautiful monuments, which are reminiscent of that time.
Friday/Saturday:
Kampen - Lemmer - Medemblik
We leave the IJssel early for our next destination, Lemmer. Its location on the Frisian lakes and the IJsselmeer makes it one of the most famous water sports places in Friesland. In the maritime centre you can stroll along original shops or settle down on one of the pleasant terraces along the quays. Lovers of architecture, water and steam, can indulge themselves at the Woudagemaal. It is the oldest working steam pumping station in the world. During lunch we cross the IJsselmeer to Medemblik. The Oudehaven and Oosterhaven, together with a few monuments in the centre, are recognizable remnants of the flourishing Golden Age. Medemblik gained its wealth through the timber trade and sailing on the Baltic Sea.
Saturday/Sunday:
Medemblik - Oudeschild (Texel)
In the morning we make the crossing to Texel. From the port of Oudeschild you can visit the island during a bus tour (*). It is the largest Wadden island in the Netherlands and has only 7 villages. The National Park 'Dunes of Texel' is the largest protected nature area on the island. In the middle of this park is Ecomare, where stranded seals and birds are taken care of to recuperate. In the VOC era, Texel was the supply point for trading ships that were about to sail to faraway places.
Sunday/Monday:
Oudeschild (Texel) - Stavoren - Hoorn
We head back to the mainland. Around coffee time we arrive in Stavoren. In the harbour is the statue of the "Woman of Stavoren". A wealthy merchant's widow from the well-known saga. During lunch we cross the IJsselmeer again to Hoorn. A nice shopping city with an attractive centre. The lively harbour is home to many sights from the rich VOC past. The Hoofdtoren stands prominently in the harbour and is one of the last remaining defences from the late Middle Ages.
Monday/Tuesday:
Hoorn – Wijk bij Duurstede
We leave beautiful Hoorn behind and head for our next overnight stop of this fantastic journey. In Wijk bij Duurstede, Duurstede Castle and the 'Rijn en Lek' Mill bear witness to a rich history.
Tuesday/Wednesday:
Wijk bij Duurstede - Nijmegen
Via the Waal we sail upstream to one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Nijmegen. This city has a rich history and many attractions are within walking distance. The Waag on the Grote Markt, the Sint-Stevenskerk and the Valkhof are definitely worth a visit this afternoon. In the evening the captain will invite you for the Captains Dinner.
Wednesday/Thursday:
Nijmegen - Arnhem
This new wonderful journey through the Netherlands is almost over. After you have enjoyed a delicious lunch, we will arrive back in Arnhem at 2pm, where we will say goodbye to each other.
